My Tenth Grade Curriculum

This past school year I was a sophomore. As a tenth grader, my curriculum consisted of ten high school credits taken over both the summer and regular school year. Here’s a quick list of my coursework: 

• Honors Algebra II (Shormann Math and Science, self-paced) 

• Honors/ Pre-AP Chemistry (Novare, Chemistry for Accelerated Students through Wilson Hill Academy) 

• The Great Conversation 4 (Classic history, literature, and theology, WHA) 

• Latin Readings Honors (Henle Latin II Caesar through Memoria Academy) 

• Greek II (Memoria Press Second Form Greek) 

• American Sign Language II (Florida Virtual School Flex) 

• Foundations of Programming (FLVS Flex) 

• Finance and Entrepreneurship (Foundations in Personal Finance and Foundations in Entrepreneurship, Ramsey Classroom) 

• Health (Abeka Health in Christian Perspective through a local co-op) 

 

Algebra 2: I chose to do Shormann’s Algebra II for a couple of reasons. First, I wanted a self-paced course so I wouldn’t have to adhere to a specific schedule. Second, Shormann does not have a separate geometry class. Instead, Algebra I and Algebra II both include geometry. I wanted a review of the geometry I had learned from the previous year, specifically for standardized tests, which Dr. Shormann also focuses on. Finally, Shormann has a specific College Algebra CLEP prep course for free on completion of the Algebra II class. I had been wanting to take this test and will do so this summer, and this course was very helpful in preparing to take it.  

Chemistry: I have loved Wilson Hill for the two years that I’ve been a part of it now. Their classes are amazing, so I decided to take the chemistry course that was designed to follow the physics course I had taken in my freshman year. It was a wonderful class and Novare is a great curriculum.  

The Great Conversation 4: After taking TGC 3, I knew I wanted to continue with the program. TGC4 is classical history based, and we read a variety of ancient source texts specifically from Rome and Greece. We focused heavily on different philosophers and how their worldviews shaped Western culture. You can read more about The Great Conversation in this post.  

Latin Readings: I did Memoria Press’ Fourth Form Latin when I was in ninth grade, so I decided to stick with their progression. I also had the option to go straight into AP Latin, but I felt like another year to solidify the Latin Grammar I had learned and begin translating would be very helpful. Henle Latin II spent the first semester reviewing grammar, and the second semester started translating portions of Caesar’s De Bello Gallico.  

Greek II: In eighth grade, I started learning New Testament (Koine) Greek with Memoria Press’ First Form Greek. They came out with Second Form right before my freshman year, but I had already decided on all my classes that year, so I wasn’t able to take the second part of Greek that year. I wanted to continue studying Greek, so I decided to take the second year as a sophomore. The curriculum is very similar to Memoria’s Latin curriculum, and the format is very neat and easy to follow. 

American Sign Language II: I took this class in the summer leading up to my sophomore year. It was a quick class. To complete it in a summer, I just had to do one lesson per day, which took about 30 minutes or so. I love ASL, so being able to develop my skills further was a lot of fun. 

Foundations of Programming: FLVS has a computer science sequence of courses, which involves DIT, Foundations of Programming, and Procedural Programming. I took DIT in the summer before ninth grade, and the summer before tenth grade I took Foundations of Programming. Foundations teaches basic Python and how to make certain programs using the language.  

Finance and Entrepreneurship: I took these two half-credit courses over the summer through the Dave Ramsey curriculum. He has a self-paced online option through Ramsey Classroom. The finance class had 13 modules, each with about 5 sections. The entrepreneurship class was a bit shorter with four modules, still with about 5 sections each. It’s an interactive course with journal questions, short quizzes, and videos to watch almost every day. 

Health: A health class is a requirement for graduation in Florida and is generally recommended for homeschoolers to take. I took this as a semester class through my local co-op since it was offered and we were able to easily find and join it. The Abeka curriculum had a textbook for students as well as a test book. There were quizzes every one to three sub-chapters, as well as a test after every chapter. There were also two exams- a nine-week exam and a final exam. It seemed that the curriculum was meant to be completed over about an eighteen-week period, but my co-op completed it in fifteen weeks to fit the weekly meetings of the co-op calendar.
