My Junior Year Plan

My junior year of high school has officially started. In just two weeks my classes will all be underway, so I wanted to share what I decided to do for this year, as I did for sophomore and freshman years.  

 

• AP Latin (Wilson Hill Academy) 

• AP Biology (WHA, Campbell Biology in Focus textbook) 

• College Composition I (local community college, ENC 1101) 

• US Government (Hillsdale College, OLA-102) 

• Precalculus with Trigonometry (Shormann Mathematics, self-paced) 

• Procedural Programming (Florida Virtual School Flex) 

 

AP Latin: I’ve been studying Latin since seventh grade, and I’ve been memorizing basic declensions and conjugations since first grade. In ninth grade, I had learned virtually all the Latin grammar that is commonly taught. Last year, I took a readings course through Memoria Academy to really solidify my grasp on Latin grammar. This year, I wanted to finish off the past 10 years of memorization and study with AP Latin, which is generally the last Latin course students will take (unless they pursue it in college). Wilson Hill offers a great opportunity for this, as well as being taught by one of my favorite teachers.  

 

AP Biology: I really wanted to take an AP science course since natural sciences are not what I plan to pursue in college. Having taken chemistry last year, I felt like I should take biology this year, especially because in my senior year I plan on taking Computer Science. I haven’t had the previous biology class that was recommended, but after contacting the teacher I decided to try this course and do some extra studying over the summer. I’m very excited to dive in with this class through Wilson Hill, and even though I prefer chemistry, there are some concepts I’m excited to get started with.  

 

College Composition I: I am not planning on majoring in English in college, and while I do enjoy grammar and writing, I don’t want to have to do it in college. Taking a writing class in college along with other classes that will likely involve writing just wouldn’t be my ideal plan. Because of that, I decided to do dual enrollment this year with the hope that I will be able to transfer out of any general education English requirements when I’m in college. I’m taking the class in the traditional online method which means there are recorded videos and due dates for assignments, but the class doesn’t have a meeting day or time. If this first semester goes well, I’ll take ENC 1102, which is titled Composition: Literature next semester. 

 

US Government: There is a general high school graduation requirement to have 0.5 credits in government. This is another course that I don’t necessarily want to take in college. I was between AP and dual enrollment. Hillsdale College just started a distance learning dual enrollment program, so I decided to take their class. It’s completely online and meets live either two or three days a week depending on the class section.  

 

Precalculus: Last year I did Algebra II with Shormann Math. It went pretty well, so I decided to stick with Shormann this year. It’s completely self-paced, which is really nice for scheduling around my live classes.  

 

Procedural Programming: I’ve previously taken Digital Information Technology and Foundations of Programming through FLVS. The next step was Procedural Programming. Since I plan on taking AP Computer Science next year, I figured Procedural Programming would be a good class for this year. It’s also self-paced and only has a requirement of completing one assignment per week (which would finish the course in a school year). Because of this, I figured it would be a good class to have that would also be flexible with my other commitments.  

 

I plan on going more in-depth with some of these classes in the future, but that’s my curriculum plan for this year!
