Memoria Press Greek

In eighth grade, after studying Latin for seven years, I decided to add to my classical language study. I started Greek using Memoria Press’ Forms series. This curriculum was designed by Cheryl Lowe and Michael Simpson and is very similar to the Latin Forms series. 

About the Series 

There are currently two levels of Greek offered in the Forms series. There is also a book that teaches the alphabet, which I did the summer before eighth grade so that I would have a knowledge base for the upcoming year. I completed First Form in eighth grade, but Second Form didn’t come out until the following year. Because of that, I didn’t do Second Form Greek until tenth grade. The series operates in a similar way to the Latin Forms series, which you can read about here. Accordingly, each form has a textbook, workbook, teacher book, answer key, quiz/test book, flashcards, and a pronunciation CD.  

 

What does a typical week look like? 

First Form Greek has a video streaming option. When I used the curriculum, I would watch the video on a Monday, as well as complete the Day 1 homework in the workbook. On Tuesday I would complete the Day 2 workbook page. I did the same on Wednesdays and Thursdays with the workbook pages. Finally, on Friday, I took the weekly quiz or test. For Second Form, I followed the same pattern, but I just read the textbook and teacher book on Monday instead of watching a lesson since there were no streaming videos. 

 

Helpful Features 

In Greek, possibly even more so than Latin, I felt like there was a lot of review. Greek is a difficult language (though in some ways arguably easier than Latin). Most weeks, I didn’t memorize the ending form in one week. Because of this, I really liked that there was continued review throughout the year incorporated into the workbook exercises. I also found the streaming videos in First Form very helpful. They often included mnemonics or other memorizing ideas that weren’t in the textbook or teacher book, which I enjoyed. The books also make sure to point out similarities in different types of endings so that the student can learn to recognize when these happen and how to tell the difference between the conjugations or declensions. 

 

Like the Latin Forms series, the Greek Forms series makes Greek clear and easy to understand. The books break down the endings in a simple way that focuses on mastery of the grammar, while also allowing for the fun of translation.
