Summer is a nice time to relax and recharge after a long and probably exhausting year of schoolwork. But it’s also a great time to do more than just sleep in or even read all day.
Of course, reading is great, and it’s definitely a good idea to catch up on missed sleep and let yourself relax. However, especially if you’re like me and enjoy staying active, summer can also be a great time to explore new hobbies, get active, and do anything you don’t have time for during the school year.
Last week I shared some of my goals for this summer, but this post will explain why I chose some of them and the benefits to give you some summer ideas.
Classes
One great idea for summer, especially if you’re finishing 8th-10th grade, is to take a class that you would rather not take during the school year. As I wrote in this post, summer is a wonderful time for those electives and easier classes that you might want to take or need for credit, but that could end up being a pain during the school year.
Learn Something New
Is there something you’ve been wanting to learn but feel like you never have time for? Summer is a wonderful time to explore new hobbies and expand your knowledge. Just ask a friend or family member to teach you or find a kit or video with instructions and get started!
Research
Researching colleges and scholarships is perfect for the summer. If you’re like me, you probably couldn’t do much of this during the school year. But it’s a great idea, no matter how old you are, to start learning about the schools you’re interested in. If you have the chance, you can even tour some of them!
Working
If you’re old enough, you can get a summer job or internship. These can help you explore your interests and make some extra money to save for a car or college or just have a little extra spending money. Try to find something you’ll enjoy doing so that you look forward to it. That way, you’ll still be able to have fun during the summer and not dread each day that you work.
Stay Active
If you don’t normally do any sports, or if your sport isn’t in season in the summer, there are a ton of things you can do to be active. Going to the gym, doing at-home workouts or even playing with your younger siblings and going for walks are great ways to keep moving this summer.
While of course reading and resting are wonderful ways to spend a summer, those doesn’t have to be the only things you do. Summer is such a great time to expand your interests so try some of these summer ideas to do something that you wouldn’t get to do during the school year.
