College Tour: High Point University

The seventh stop on our college tour, the day after visiting Gardner-Webb, was High Point University.  

 

The Basics 

High Point is a private university located in High Point, North Carolina. Their motto is God, Family, Country. They emphasize patriotism and seem to place a special emphasis on business skills. There are about 6000 total students with a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio.  

 

The Christian Aspect 

High Point seems to be loosely affiliated with the United Methodist Church. They have a chapel on campus, but there are no required services. They also require a religion class, but the religion each student takes is up to that person. Our tour guide had taken a class on Buddhism.  

 

Academics 

High Point University is very business focused. Every freshman takes a life skills course taught by the president of the university. HPU brings in global business leaders and innovators to teach classes and mentor students by giving seminars. There are over 60 undergraduate major options, as well as a variety of minors and graduate degrees. They also offer an honors program with a core curriculum consisting of 39 credits.

Student Life 

High Point is committed to preparing all students for business life. There are mock interviews with faculty and staff, and meeting rooms for students to practice public speaking. They also take professional headshot photos for all students. There are a variety of exercise amenities as well as pools. High Point offers NCAA Division I and club sports. The club sports are opportunities for students who wish to participate in athletics but don’t want to have the same commitments as are required by a DI school. There is a free arcade and a sports bar, as well as two full restaurants where students can dine once per week. These restaurants require reservations, and, as students dine, there are faculty on staff that teach proper etiquette. They also change the menu once per month to reflect cultures from around the world. Most of HPU’s dorm rooms more closely resemble apartments than a traditional dorm with 2-4 bedrooms, each housing 1-2 students, a bathroom in the room, and a common living space with a kitchenette.  

 

Admissions and Scholarships 

High Point offers merit, ROTC housing, and departmental scholarships, as well as scholarships for the Eagle and Gold awards through Boy and Girl Scouts, respectively. They also accept outside scholarships. Their merit scholarships range from $5000-full tuition depending on the student’s high school GPA, test scores, and interview performance. The cost of tuition (with fees) is $46,548, and housing and food are an additional $19,128. 

 

High Point University has a beautiful campus, and they invest in students to create future business leaders. They had amazing amenities and programs for college students, and visiting was a wonderful experience.
